Daicon III & IV Opening Animations

"It`s either real, or it`s a dream, there`s nothing that is in between."

There are many ways one can describe the Daicon III and IV videos, but when someone pointed out to me the quote above (which is a lyric to the song in the Daicon IV video), it made me realize something: these short videos represent the dreams of science fiction and animation fans the world over -- the dreams of the otaku. It`s what a fan might subconsciously envision after watching 12+ hours of anime, having played six or more hours of video games, ingested liters worth of Coke Classic, and having used just a little too much wasabi with the sushi. We are treated to wild and crazy visions of cool, cute, and powerful bunny girls, cities being destroyed and rebuilt, sakura blossoms... just a mish-mash of everything you`ve ever seen in a way that only makes sense when you`re dreaming -- Macross Valkyries with Gundam beam sabers, flying swords performing the "Itano Circus", Darth Vader vs. our hero as Imperial stormtroopers cheer on, a huge white radish firing its main cannon to repopulate the world with trees, all kinds of special effects shots, and reference after reference to the shows and movies which have inspired us, continue to inspire us, and capture our imagination as fans.

The Daicon (note: a daikon is a Japanese white radish) videos are cool to watch just for the sake of watching them, but they`re important for other reasons, too. Without the Daicon videos, the studio known as Gainax might never have come into being. Daicon III, held in Osaka in 1981, was the 20th Japan Science Fiction Convention. The volunteer staff of mostly college kids created the short (music video length) opening animation for the convention`s opening ceremonies. This is the "Daicon III video". Although it was an amateur production using relatively low technology, fans loved it, and the use of opening animations at conventions would become a long-lasting tradition.

On the first day of school, they all make their own unique entrances on the opening ceremonies. But, a trio of terrorrists decide to do away with the girls as they believe they are the epitome of all lower-class persons. The police swarm the school trying to protect the girls, but the team`s clever (and possibly psychic) leader decides to handle this case on her own and has their disquise expert make herself up like the police chief to send them away. But then the criminals attack trapping the girls forcing them to use their own special abilities to make it out alive before a time bomb made to look like a bad piece of sculpture goes off. What happens next is a fight with the terrorrists which looks like a cross between a STREET FIGHTER parody and GUNSMITH CATS. Apparently the team leader does have psychic powers of somekind as she can fire Hado-Kens at attacking fighter jets and control their joysticks with her mind. The only really weird part is that one of the bad guys is apparently an ex-member of Marvel Comics` Avengers as he can for no really explained reason turn himself into a 40 ft. giant. which causes the girl`s Shampoo-type character to loose it and go ballistic on him PROJECT A-KO style.

Demon of Steel: Battle of the Great Demon Beasts

It starts off in a familiar sort of way. Mankind has got it`s collective act together enough to build a high energy physics lab. And, barring the collective howls from anyone who`d want to work on it, have built it on a featureless island in the middle of some ocean. This lab procedes to discover a new sub-atomic energy source which, being humans, we turn into an energy beam weapon and mount on a satellite. We also test it on a spare aircraft carrier. And while the weapon is more successful it also causes a strange black vortex to occur, from which emerges a huge and strange statue. An on-site mini-submarine crew, against their own wishes for self preservation, are ordered to grab a sample.

Denpa Teki na Kanojo

Juuzawa Juu is a delinquent high school boy who just wants to be left alone.
